With around 4.1 million inhabitants, Rhineland-Palatinate is the sixth largest and the ninth largest of 16 federal states in terms of area. The state capital and at the same time the most populous city is Mainz. Other important cities are Ludwigshafen, Koblenz, Trier and Kaiserslautern.
Rhineland-Palatinate borders in the north with North Rhine-Westphalia, in the east with Hesse and Baden-Württemberg, in the south with the French region Grand Est and Saarland, and in the west with Luxembourg and the province of Liège in the Belgian region of Wallonia.
A particular tourist attraction in the Palatinate is the 85 km long German Wine Route. Next to it there is the 70-kilometer German Gemstone Road near Idar-Oberstein on the Upper Nahe and in the Hunsrück.
